CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jacquelyn Gates has been named to the new position of vice president of diversity and ethics at Duke Energy. She will join the company on Oct. 16.

Gates will provide enterprise leadership and consultation for diversity, work/life and business ethics initiatives, policies and practices. She will also work with Duke Energy business units to support and enhance diversity and business ethics initiatives.

For the past 10 years, Gates has led various ethics and corporate culture initiatives – starting first with NYNEX and later with Bell Atlantic as the two companies merged. During her tenure, Bell Atlantic was the 1999 recipient of the American Business Ethics Award and received the highest grade on the 1999 National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Annual Telecommunications Industry Report Card. Most recently, she was vice president, ethics, corporate compliance and diversity with the newly named Verizon Communications in New York City.

Prior to her work with Bell Atlantic, Gates held strategic management positions at Time-Warner, Pepsico, Revlon and J.C. Penney.

Gates is a board member of the Ethics Officer Association, Martin Luther King Senior Citizens Center and Bedford Stuyvesant YMCA. She is the chair of the Corporate Roundtable of the National Association of Commissions on Women and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Society of Business, Economics and Ethics. Gates is also on the Advisory Board of the Center for Business Ethics at Bentley (Mass.) College, the National Association of Black Telecommunications Professionals and the Corporate Women’s Roundtable of Spelman (Ga.) College.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Gates earned her undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College and continued her graduate studies at the New School for Social Research in New York City. She has three children.
