CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Duke Engineering & Services (DE&S) has been selected as part of a team led by Montgomery Watson to decommission, decontaminate and dismantle (D&D) nuclear facilities at the National Aeronautics & Space Administration's (NASA) Plum Brook Station near Sandusky, Ohio.

The Plum Brook Station nuclear facilities contributed to the U.S. space program, conducting extensive research on the effects of radiation on materials used in space flight until operations were suspended in 1973. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is responsible for the site's environmental restoration. The estimated $160 million, five-year project will be completed under Montgomery Watson's Total Environmental Restoration Contract with the USACE's Louisville District.

DE&S will provide management and technical resources for D&D of the radiological controlled areas of the 27-acre project site. DE&S' work scope includes the dismantling and removal of a 60-megawatt reactor, a 100-kilowatt test reactor and the site's radiologically contaminated infrastructure.

"DE&S' depth of experience in the nuclear industry, including D&D activities at federal and commercial sites, gives us the unique skill sets and knowledge base to meet the complex challenges of this project," said Tom Stevens, executive vice president of DE&S' federal group. "We look forward to working with Montgomery Watson on this important D&D project."
