CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Roberta Bowman has been promoted to senior vice president, public affairs, and chief communications officer for Duke Energy.

Bowman will direct all communications for the corporation, including corporate advertising and marketing communications, community relations and corporate philanthropy, media relations and employee communications.

A native of West Hartford, Conn., Bowman graduated with distinction from Tufts University, Medford, Mass.

Bowman worked at Northeast Utilities in Hartford, Conn., before joining Duke Power in 1986 as director of power plant community relations. She was named general manager of public issues in 1993 and also served as a bulk power marketing manager in the company’s system planning and operating division. She was named vice president, corporate communications in 1996 and vice president, public affairs following the creation of Duke Energy in 1997.

Bowman currently chairs the Steering Committee to the 2001 U.S. Women’s Open, to be held at Pine Needles Golf Club and Lodge in Southern Pines May 28 – June 3, 2001. The U.S. Women’s Open is the most prestigious and well-known of all national women’s golf championships. She also serves on the board of directors of Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont. She is afellow in the Arthur W. Page Society of public relations executives, serves on The Conference Board's Council of Communications Executive and is a member of Women Executives.

She and her husband, Andrew Bowman, live in Charlotte.
