DUKE ENERGY INTERNATIONAL APPOINTS HEAD OF EUROPEAN BUSINESS

LONDON/HOUSTON– Duke Energy International (DEI) announced today the appointment of Alfred Sorensen as senior vice president of DEI and head of DEI Europe, effective immediately. Sorensen will lead DEI’s European merchant energy business including trading and marketing, natural gas and power portfolio development as well as acquisitions and divestitures. He reports to DEI President and CEO Bruce Williamson and will be based in London.

"Having helped build and run Duke Energy’s Canadian gas and power trading and marketing business, Alfred brings a wealth of experience in risk management, commodity trading, origination and development to our European business. His expertise and proven leadership capabilities add tremendous depth to our European team and will enable Duke Energy to rapidly build its gas and power trading and marketing business."

Prior to today’s appointment, Sorensen was president of the Canadian trading division of Duke Energy Trading and Marketing (DETM), a position he held since 1997. A native of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Sorensen began his career with Duke Energy in 1987 as a marketing representative. Since then he has served in a number of positions of increasing responsibility within the trading company and in 1999 was responsible for expanding DETM’s Canadian division into power trading from its gas trading platform.

Sorensen attended the University of Alberta, where he obtained a degree in commerce. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and a director of the Alberta Ballet Company.
