Duke Power, a unit of Duke Energy, one of the United State's largest investor-owned electric utilities, has landed the title of Best Electricity Company at the inaugural Financial Times Energy Awards, sponsored by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu, at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York, November 8. 1999.

According to Roberto Chiarotti, publisher of FT Energy, "The electricity industry faces unprecedented challenges and the importance of customer service is made increased by competition: for nearly 100 years. Duke has provided safe, reliable, competitively priced electricity and outstanding customer service to customers in North Carolina and South Carolina."

What tipped the judges scales in favor of Duke power was the outstanding customer care proffered by the company. The Duke Power 24-hour Customer Service Centre is renowned for its efficiency—the company guarantees a human voice speaking to a customer within 30 seconds.

Last year, Duke Power's nuclear fuel costs were the best in the United States. Collectively, the company's three nuclear stations operate more efficiently than the national average, running at near capacity and producing more than half of Duke Power's annual net generation.

By delivering quality electricity at attractive rates, and by being there when customers need them, Duke Power has been the standard by which other electric companies are judged.
