CATAWBA COUNTY STUDENT NAMED DUKE POWER SCHOLAR

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Catawba County high school student has won Duke Power’s highest scholastic award.

Blair Jordon Brown of Conover will receive one of three Duke Power Scholastic Excellence Awards. Brown attends Bandys High School in Catawba. He is the son of Bill and Martha Brown.

The other scholarship winners are: Eric Efird Hoyle of Winston-Salem and Claudia Kristine Vissage of Mountain Rest, S.C.

Sponsored by The Duke Energy Foundation through shareholder funds, the scholarships have been provided for 15 years. Each of the three students will receive a scholarship valued at up to $5,000 per year, which is renewable for four years of undergraduate study. The students must attend an accredited college or university in North Carolina or South Carolina.

Almost 650 students were considered for this year’s awards.

Students were judged in final interviews on academic record, leadership ability and awareness of career goals. A total of seven other finalists were chosen for the awards. They will receive a $1,000 stipend for their higher education.

The nomination process for the Duke Power scholarship awards begins in the fall of the student’s senior year. The deadline for nominations is October 15. Interviews are held in January of the following year.
