HOUSTON - - Duke Energy has named Robert Howell executive vice president of mergers and acquisitions for its Energy Services Group, effective July 1.

Energy Services includes the following Duke Energy business units: Duke Energy Merchants, Duke Energy International, Duke Energy North America, DukeSolutions, Duke Engineering & Services and Duke/Fluor Daniel. Howell reports to Harvey Padewer, group president of Energy Services.

"I’ve known Howell for a number of years and believe his experience and knowledge will be an asset to the continuing growth of Energy Services," Padewer said.

Before joining Duke Energy, Howell was senior vice president of corporate development for UtiliCorp United Inc. where he was responsible for all external company growth. He joined UtiliCorp in 1988 as vice president of corporate development and was named senior vice president of corporate development in 1991, a position he held until joining Duke Energy.

He has served on the boards of directors of Aquila Gas Pipeline; Power New Zealand; Communication Solutions, Inc.; WEL Energy Group; Interactive Computer Modeling; and is the former chairman of the board for UtiliCorp New Zealand.

He received a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Iowa State University in 1964 and a master of business administration from the University of Minnesota in 1968.
