BOSTON -- Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline, L.L.C. (Maritimes) today announced its contractors and initial construction schedule for Phase II of the natural gas pipeline. Construction of the 200- mile mainline from Baileyville, Maine, to Westbrook, Maine, is scheduled to begin in early February with the horizontal directional drilling of the Androscoggin, Kennebec, Penobscot and St. Croix rivers.

Michels Pipeline Construction, Inc. of Brownsville, Wis., recognized in the pipeline industry as a leader in drilling technology, has been awarded the contract to perform the horizontal directional drilling. Horizontal directional drilling will be used when crossing major water bodies to protect natural habitats and environmental resources.

Maritimes has also named Sheehan Pipe Line Construction Company of Tulsa, Okla, H.C. Price Company of Dallas and Latex Construction Company of Atlanta as the general contractors for the project. Each contractor will be responsible for building a portion of the Phase II mainline pipeline beginning in the spring.

"With our contractors in place, we are ready to begin early construction on this project. Gas will be flowing by our previously announced in-service date of November 1, 1999," said Tom O’Connor, president of M & N Management Company, managing member of Maritimes.

Maritimes and its contractors will be hosting contractor fairs to provide information on subcontracting opportunities to interested Maine companies. The contractor fairs will be held from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on March 3, 1999, at the Bangor Civic Center, and from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on March 4, 1999, at the Augusta Civic Center.
