UNIT 1 AT McGUIRE NUCLEAR SITE ESTABLISHES NEW DUKE POWER REFUELING OUTAGE RECORD

HUNTERSVILLE, NC -- Duke Power’s McGuire Nuclear Station Unit 1 set a company record for shortest refueling outage, 33 days, 19 hours and four minutes, when it returned to service Wednesday, July 1.

Unit 1 began the outage May 29.

Duke’s previous shortest refueling was recorded by Catawba Unit I in January 1998 at 37 days, 17 hours and 48 minutes. Catawba and McGuire have similar systems.

"We’re pleased to complete an event-free outage and set a company record for shortest refueling," said Brew Barron, site vice president. "Using lessons learned from Catawba, the team put together and executed a great plan, and stayed focused as they dealt with unanticipated opportunities this outage presented. I’m extremely proud of their achievement. We’d also like to recognize the 500 non-site Duke employees and 550 contract personnel who were critical to this success."

The previous shortest refueling outage for McGuire Unit 1 was 42 days. Unit 2 completed a 39-day outage in 1996.
