Duke Power today celebrates 75 years of service from its Mountain Island Hydro Station.

"Mountain Island went into operation on Dec. 16, 1923 and has worked hard providing electricity for the company and its customers," said Ben Taylor – Duke Power Manager of Hydro Generation. "The station has been a dependable source of power for us when we’ve needed it."

The earth and stone dam and hydroelectric station are located on Mountain Island Lake, just off of Mountain Island Road in Mount Holly. The four units produce 15 megawatts each and are connected to the Duke Power system grid. The electricity generated at the station is used by Duke Power to supply customers in the Piedmont Carolina’s.

"Our hydro stations provide tremendous support to our overall system," said Taylor. "With their operation, we can quickly and efficiently meet the peaking needs of our customers – during the hottest or coldest times of the day – in the most economical way. This helps us effectively manage the cost of electricity to the customer."
