Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I am eligible to participate in this pilot program?

  • Your home must have a certified Smart Meter which accurately records your electric usage for each hour of the day, (not just average or monthly reads like traditional meters). This enables Duke Energy to offer rates that are based on actual hourly usage.
  • Since we cannot offer rate programs to customers of other electric suppliers, you must also purchase your electric service from Duke Energy Ohio.
  • Since this pilot is tied to your monthly usage and associated bill, your account must be in satisfactory standing, (not in arrears) and not part of a payment assistance program.

How do I sign-up for the My Select Rate pilot program?

A: You can sign up by simply clicking the 'Select your rate' button to the right of this page or you can also sign up by calling 1-800-591-3853 Monday through Friday 8am-5pm.

If I participate in the My Select Rate pilot could my electric bill increase?

A: YES. If you are NOT able to shift your energy use away from the 3-hour peak times you choose for summer and winter weekdays you could see an increase in your electric bill during those periods. However, you will also save money the other 96% of the year.

Why should I participate in this pilot?

A:This pilot gives you the opportunity to save energy and money, and helps us better assess the program and the value it can bring to our customers. The benefits are clear. It costs you nothing to join, and you can save money during 96% of the year with no action required on your part.

How long is the pilot program?

A:The pilot will run from May 1, 2013 through May 31, 2015, and we will accept enrollments until June 1, 2014.

Are there incentives associated with this pilot?

A:YES. Should you choose to participate in any of the surveys, contests, or focus groups held throughout the pilot you will earn money that will accumulate in a “Bonus Bank” to be paid out at the end of the pilot via a Visa Prepaid Card.

How are the seasons of My Select Rate defined?

A:The pilot is divided into four seasons:

  • Winter months are December through February
  • Spring months are March through May…Consisting of one low rate and NO PEAK PRICING time periods
  • Summer months are June through August
  • Fall months are September through November…Consisting of one low rate and NO PEAK PRICING time periods

How can I achieve the annual savings potential this rate offers?

A:First, you will be saving money during every off-peak hour, because the off-peak pricing of My Select Rate is always lower than the standard residential electric rate. Off-peak pricing is in effect during 96% of the year. However, to ensure you realize the full savings potential this pilot rate offers, you must remember to shift energy consumption away from the three hour peak times you choose during summer and winter weekdays. Duke Energy Ohio wants to see you save peak energy, so we will assist you throughout the program by providing reminders and useful tips.

How will I know how I am doing on the rate?

A:We will send you a semi-annual bill comparison showing how you performed on the My Select Rate pilot program versus had you remained on Duke Energy Ohio’s standard residential rate, (RS), as well as how your household stacked up against other pilot participants.

Is there a deadline for signing up to participate?

A:We will accept enrollment through June 1, 2014.

Can I remain on the My Select Rate after the pilot concludes?

A:YES. At the end of the 24-month pilot, customers may choose to remain on My Select Rate or discontinue participation with no penalty. However, Duke Energy reserves the right to terminate the program after 24 months. In that case, the customer will be promptly notified and given the option to return to their previous rate, or take advantage of an alternative program if one is offered.

What if I want to leave the pilot?

A:After 12 months of participation on the pilot, you will have the option to opt-out of the program if you so desire. Otherwise, you may only exit this pilot program and return to traditional rating and billing for reasons of hardship. Approval to exit the program for reasons of hardship shall be at the sole discretion of Duke Energy, and may include but is not limited to:

  • loss of employment
  • medical need
  • moving from the premises
  • bankruptcy
  • death or account termination

Will there be any changes in how I am billed?

A:No, you will maintain the same billing experience; the only change you will notice is the charges for your electric generation service will be billed under My Select Rate, which will appear under the technical name of TD-13. If you currently participate in an additional program such as Budget Billing or Power Manager, you will still be able to enjoy the benefits and/or convenience of those programs while participating in My Select Rate..

I own and operate a small business. Can I include my business in the pilot?

A:No, the pilot program is only open to residential customers of Duke Energy Ohio with single phased metered service.

Why is Duke Energy offering a program to help me save energy and money?

A:We want to help everyone save energy and cut costs. Improving energy efficiency is simply good for us all — and for the planet. The U.S. Department of Energy projects that the demand for electricity will increase by 40 percent by 2030. Keeping up with this demand will be difficult, and building new power plants is expensive. When customers are able to conserve energy, the financial return on the electricity saved is nearly as much as the cost to build a new power plant. Energy efficiency means Duke Energy can meet the demand for electricity without increasing rates to build new power plants. It also helps us meet renewable energy standard requirements.
