Protecting Water Withdrawals from the Catawba-Wateree River
December 14, 2007 Filing

On Dec. 14, 2007, Duke Energy filed a federal lawsuit to stop unauthorized, unapproved construction by the Town of Mooresville at its existing water intake on Lake Norman. As the Federal Energy Regulatory Agency (FERC) licensee for the 11-lake Catawba-Wateree Hydro Project (the Project), Duke is responsible for managing uses of Project land and water, which includes approving construction projects inside the Project boundary. Duke’s goal remains to seek an expeditious resolution to this situation, however, it must be a solution that is approved by FERC and Duke and one that clearly defines the amount of, and limitations on, water withdrawal from the Catawba-Wateree Project. Duke, as FERC’s licensee and on behalf of all other stakeholder interests in the Project, must take legal steps to appropriately balance the water needs of the region.

Drought Update and Boat Ramp Closings for Catawba-Wateree Lakes

Duke Energy will continue to closely monitor the remaining open ramps and take actions as they become necessary.

Please do the following:

  • take appropriate actions now regarding your watercraft and lake facilities;
  • check status of lake access area boat ramps (shown below), which may be closed to launching boats on trailers; and
  • use extreme caution if out on any of the Catawba River lakes.
