Solar and Coal Power Integration

In 2009, our Mayo Plant in Roxboro, N.C. was one of only two host sites in the United States for a technology and economic feasibility study of integrating solar thermal energy with existing coal and natural gas power plants.

This project evaluated the viability of hybrid power plants that combine the low cost and reliability of existing fossil power plants with the environmental benefits of renewables. Despite the cost benefits of leveraging existing fossil plant capital equipment, this project concluded that the low level of solar intensity in North Carolina limits the economic viability of utility-scale concentrating solar thermal technologies for this region.
