Dry Ash Handling
Dry ash handling describes the process of how the ash is transported and placed in an engineered landfill. Duke Energy manages coal ash in this manner at a number of its generating facilities in both the Carolinas and the Midwest. All of Duke Energy’s dry ash landfills are permitted by the state in which the facility is located. When a portion of a landfill reaches its capacity, it is covered with soil and grassed to manage rainwater infiltration – or otherwise capped in accordance with the permit conditions.
