Customer Owned Generation

Duke Energy Carolinas encourages the development of cost effective customer-owned cogeneration and small power production facilities as a key part of our integrated resource planning process and for the conservation of our natural resources.

Getting permission to interconnect your generation with the grid is relatively easy, but there are several important steps to follow to ensure that it is done properly and safely. Interconnections must be individually accepted and inspected prior to operating in parallel with the electric grid.

If you are located in North Carolina, state law requires that you satisfy the North Carolina Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity process before you begin construction. Be sure to plan sufficient time into your project timetable for this process.

Finally, there are several electrical rate options for configuring your system. Choose the option that provides the most benefit for your project

Get the process started by reviewing Interconnection Information and downloading a Project Checklist (pdf, 20 KB).
