Duke Power Retirees Help Make a House a Home for the Elderly
They are known for their expertise in carpentry and electrical work, but they will be remembered for making a difference. Members of Duke Power's Spartanburg, S.C., retiree chapter and Duke Power employees recently volunteered to build a handicap ramp, repair doors, install new light fixtures, replace a commode with one that is handicapped-accessible and complete various other repairs for an 81-year-old community neighbor.
As part of Duke Energy's Global Service Event (GSE), they worked through Christmas In Action, a nonprofit organization that works with local social service organizations in the Spartanburg area to identify elderly homeowners who need assistance with home repairs and upkeep. A number of volunteer groups have completed projects on some 40 houses in Spartanburg.
Duke Power retirees and employees have participated in volunteer efforts for Christmas in Action for the past seven years.
