African American Network

The African American Network (AAN) is an organization of African Americans and other minority employees who are interested in professional growth. The AAN offers opportunities for interaction, mentoring, professional development and business education and is one resource for professional development among minority employees.

The AAN was launched on May 17, 2007. It combined two existing employee resource groups: Collaborative for Positive Change in the Midwest and the Minority Professional Association in the Carolinas. The organization has three chapters within the company: AAN - Cincinnati, AAN - Indiana and AAN - Carolinas.

Each chapter sponsors educational sessions, leadership development opportunities, and other activities for its local members. These sponsored sessions encompass employee development initiatives, promote the value of a diverse workforce and increase an understanding of cultural differences in support of the overall goals and strategies of the organization.

The AAN organization has the following goals:

  • Create value for Duke Energy as a business resource
  • Identify development and growth opportunities for African American employees at Duke Energy
  • Create an organization with a solid brand reputation

Duke Energy’s AAN - Carolinas chapter will host its 12th annual scholarship banquet on March 7, 2008 at the Hilton Charlotte City Center, located at 222 East Third Street, Charlotte, North Carolina.  This signature event recognizes accomplishments of the African American community with an evening of fun, celebration and education. Proceeds from the banquet will be used to provide scholarships for minority students attending colleges and universities in North and South Carolina.  The scholarship banquet has awarded scholarships to 42 students over the past 11 years.
