Swain Tie Station and Transmission Lines
Electricity demand in western North Carolina continues to rise – especially in Swain and Jackson counties. The reason is a combination of commercial and residential development, including the current expansion of Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and Hotel.
In the coming years, the area’s existing electrical infrastructure will be unable to support this rising demand. That’s why it’s important for Duke Energy to complete substantial upgrades to the grid, like the installation of the future Swain Tie Station and associated transmission line improvements. These projects will provide the area with ample electricity capacity for years to come.
Duke Energy held a public workshop about the project on Nov. 16, 2010, at the Swain County Community Center. The company presented information and visuals about the location of the future tie station and the route of the associated transmission lines. Duke Energy representatives also addressed questions from government officials and community members.
The Swain Tie Station will be located off of Industrial Park Road in Swain County. The associated transmission lines will originate at the existing Wests Mill Line and extend one-half mile north to the new tie station.
Site work is currently under way for the station. Construction of both the station and new transmission lines will begin in early 2012 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.
