Floyd County - Edwardsville Substation
- Overall Project Description
- Why is Duke Energy Building a New Substation?
- Protecting Reliability
Duke Energy is building a new electric substation in Georgetown Township, Floyd County, Indiana to be known as the Edwardsville substation. This planned substation will sit between Oakes Road to the west and Edwardsville-Galena Road to the east on land purchased by Duke Energy. It will connect to an overhead Duke Energy 138-kilovolt electric line which crosses the land and has been in place since 1958.
The new Edwardsville substation will provide additional capacity necessary to maintain a reliable supply of electricity in the area. It will have approximately three times the capacity of the Georgetown substation which has been in service for over 50 years. This newer substation has been designed with the flexibility needed for regular maintenance, which should improve reliability. Also the addition of two new associated electric lines from this substation (each one about 15 miles long) should likewise improve the reliability of electric service for our customers in the region.
The Edwardsville substation will be a vital part of Duke Energy continuing to provide reliable electric service to its customers in the region. Today, the Georgetown substation is the current distribution point for power in this area. Because of the regionís growth, including a public school, the Georgetown substation is supplying about 50 percent more power than it was originally designed for. Such overcapacity increases the chance some of its components may fail, causing widespread power outages. It also means less opportunity to take the substation components out of service for regular maintenance and repair. In addition, the 12-kilovolt electric line supplying our customers from the Georgetown substation is about 25 miles long, which results in diminished electric current and a greater risk of outages from such things as adverse weather.
