Our Commitment to Ethics and Compliance

There are many ways to measure Duke Energy Corporation.

You can look at our strengths—we have excellent people with solid decision-making skills; our financial strength is impressive; and we have real depth in our leadership.

You can look at Duke Energy’s size—how many thousands of people around the world make their living as employees of Duke Energy? How many millions of dollars of electricity and gas did we sell last month? How many deals did we close in the last six months? How many miles of pipeline do we have? How many megawatts do we produce?

You can also measure Duke Energy through the eyes of others—our high customer satisfaction ratings; our environmental awards; our work in the communities where we do business; our partnerships with suppliers; our relationships with regulators and those who own Duke Energy stock.

But of all the concrete ways you can define our company—our strength, our size, our relationships—there is one measure which is not so easy to quantify. It is the measure of how we conduct our business. From South Carolina to South America; from Texas to Thailand; from the boardroom to the break room, we must make decisions every day about our work. These decisions may have legal, moral and ethical implications. To make a good decision, we must have good information and use good judgment. Our Code of Business Ethics provides employees with a framework for decision-making consistent with Duke Energy’s business values.

Duke Energy’s excellent reputation has been built on the strength of good decisions made in the past. It isn’t enough to be strong and big and successful. To be truly a great company, we must conduct our business ethically.

We all know where we want to go at Duke Energy—we want to lead the energy industry.

We also know how we want to get there—honestly, morally and with integrity. It might not be the easiest way. But for us, it is the only way.
