Introduction Oil- and Gas-Fired Combustion Turbines

In the Carolinas, Duke Energy operates a system of combustion turbines fueled by oil or natural gas. These units are used to supplement power supply during peak demand periods when electricity use is highest.

Like hydroelectric stations, combustion turbine units start quickly and usually operate only for a short time. However, they are capable of operating for extended periods. Combustion turbine units are also capable of operating together or independently.

While a small percentage of Duke Energy’s electricity is generated by combustion turbines, they continue to be an important part of Duke Energy’s power generation mix. They help ensure that our customers have an adequate supply of electricity when it’s needed most.
